"The college baseball crisis is a problem for the whole of Korean baseball," University Baseball Leaders' Council gathers together on reform measures

In the 2025 KBO Rookie Draft, only two of the players scheduled to graduate from a four-year college were selected by professional clubs.

In response, the four-year university baseball managers' council (Chairman Sohn Dong-il, manager of Wonkwang University Baseball Division) issued a statement on the 4th and urged the government to come up with measures, saying, "The crisis in university baseball is a problem for the entire Korean baseball."

A total of 1,197 people participated in the KBO Rookie Draft held on September 11. Of these, 110 were selected by 10 KBO League teams. However, only 16 were college players out of 110. Most of the players were scheduled to graduate from two-year colleges, and four-year college players had more early drafts than those who were scheduled to graduate.

The supervisor's council also said, "The supervisor's meeting is feeling a great sense of crisis as college baseball, which was an important pillar of Korean baseball, has been neglected not only by universities but also by professionals." The fall of college baseball is not just a matter of college baseball, but it has a very negative impact on the choice of youth to start baseball and the career paths of middle and high school players, and ultimately, the foundation of Korean baseball could be lost."

"The supervisor's meeting decided that the reality of today's college baseball is not just a matter of the KBO draft, but also that of the university baseball itself and its leaders, and decided to come up with a strong reform plan for the university baseball," he said.
